Moray City Council to provide flood protection for homes

PLANS to provide flood protection measures at cost to residents of Moray have been approved.

The plans are awaiting full council approval.

Moray Council Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee members have approved the plans and are now awaiting full council approval to proceed.

Property level protection is used by residents to protect their homes from flooding. These are usually barriers for doors, windows and vents. Costs can be around £ 1,300 to buy the products directly from the suppliers.

The new system allows the municipality to buy a stock of these products and offer them to residents threatened by flooding at a cost price, which could be up to 15 to 20% lower.

Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee Vice-Chair Cllr Theresa Coull said: “Spending £ 20,000 initially on this is a drop in the ocean compared to the potential cost of future flooding and helping our residents protecting their property is a priority for the council.

“I would encourage residents of properties at risk of flooding to purchase these products from the council when they become available and offered next year.”

Products available include anti-flood valves, vent guards and Floodsax. Floodsaxs are a lightweight, easily stored and biodegradable alternative to sandbags.
