IIM Africa expands its data protection campaign

The The Institute of Information Management Africa and the Records and Information Management Awareness Foundation have launched the 2022 Free National Awareness Campaign.

The campaign, titled “National Digital Transformation and Data Protection Awareness Campaign”, aims to raise awareness among organizations about the importance of the digital revolution and data preservation.

According to a statement, the campaign started in 2020 after Federation Service Chief Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan ordered ministries, departments and agencies to automate their files and records.

IIM Africa President and Chairman of the Board, Oyedokun Oyewole, said: “The regulations require that any organization processing or retaining data of Nigerian citizens must be required to comply with Nigerian data protection regulations, failure to comply with which could result in financial loss, damage to reputation or imprisonment.

“The penalty attracts up to N10 million or 2% of the company’s annual worldwide gross revenue for the previous year, whichever is greater.”

He explained that the campaign aims to educate organizations as well as provide technical and non-technical information and support necessary for successful implementation of file and document digitization.

He added that the campaign will provide quality knowledge and address skills gaps with guidelines and standards for digitization and ultimate implementation of enterprise content management solution.
