Which ruling forces protect fake alcohol mafias in Gujarat, asks Rahul – The New Indian Express

By PTI

NEW DELHI: Following the Gujarat hooch tragedy, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday expressed concern over the fake liquor and drug trade in the state and asked what forces in power were protecting the ‘mafias’ involved.

Forty-two people from Botad and neighboring district of Ahmedabad have died so far after consuming the fake alcohol on July 25, while 97 people are still admitted to hospitals in Bhavnagar, Botad and Ahmedabad, the minister said of State of Gujarat for interior Harsh Sanghavi.

“In ‘dry’ Gujarat, many houses have been destroyed due to the consumption of fake liquor.

Drugs worth billions are also collected there continuously,” Gandhi said in a Hindi tweet.

“It is a matter of great concern, in the land of Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi) and Sardar (Vallabhbhai) Patel, who are these people who indiscriminately trade drunkenness?” said the former congress leader.

What are the ruling forces that protect these “mafias”, he asked.

Fifteen key defendants, including the one who acquired the chemical and those who sold the alcohol to people, have already been arrested in the case.
